Marsha Cann
Dedicated…
To igniting the creative spark
To reflecting truth and beauty
To telling the story
Educated…
Formally educated in the public schools of St. Louis and a Washington University grad, I
relocated in 1977, right after graduation and did a 7-year stint in New York City. I
furthered my education by studying with Duane Jones at the Richard Allen Center for
Culture and Art and with Barbara Ann Teer at the National Black Theater.
Experienced…
While in New York, I began teaching creative writing and drama in afterschool
programs and performing poetry in showcase and jazz venues. Upon moving back to St.
Louis in 1984, I commenced a period of over thirty years, working in education and the
arts. In addition to my work in the public schools, I continued my long-time association
with the St. Louis Black Repertory Company and became founder and artistic Director
of 40 Corners, a study and performance workshop designed to help teens develop a
perspective on the civil rights movement of the sixties and how that translates and
informs issues they face today. Since April 2015, I am once again living in Harlem where
I have begun working with Zawadi Writers and performing poetry in Harlem and
Brooklyn jazz venues. My work has recently been published in African Voices magazine
and NYU’s Black Renaissance Noire.
Motivated…
I am passionate about writing stories and poems. I am passionate about young people
having a voice. I am passionate about being a part of a creative community. I live to
create, clarify, collaborate and connect – to change the world.
